Holidays and Caregiving

Holidays are always hectic for everyone, and often they can create more stress than we had hoped. Add caregiving into the mix, and unfortunately, it can significantly impact the caregiver’s emotional and physical well-being. When I was researching this topic, I came across some great tips from AARP for to take into consideration this holiday season.

10 Tips for Caregivers During the Holidays

  1. Focus on what is most meaningful.
  2. Simplify your holiday activities.
  3. Start new traditions.
  4. Adjust meals.
  5. Approach gift-giving more efficiently.
  6. Anticipate holiday hot buttons.
  7. Mind your mindset.
  8. Keep self-care at the top of the list.
  9. Connect with other caregivers.
  10. Ask for help.

It is very important this holiday season that caregivers sit back, take a deep breath, and reflect on the true meaning of the holiday. Remind yourself, the holiday is not about the perfectly cleaned and decorated home, or a timely cooked meal, nor is it about presents to exchange. There is nothing written in stone on how to celebrate your holiday. Simplify your holiday traditions to what meets your needs.

It is OK to start new traditions this year and celebrate in a way that fits your schedule better. It is OK to adjust meal times if need be. Be sure to ask for help when you need it, and most importantly, make time for self-care. Self-care will allow you time for yourself to de-stress and refresh and will let you to take the best care of your loved one. Find time to do the activities that you enjoy, even if it is for a few moments of your day – perhaps meditation, reading a book, watching a favorite show, or meeting with friends. Remember the holiday is about spending time with family and those you love!
