NIH offers new resource to help caregivers find right primary care doctor for their loved ones
By Douglas Flynn / May 12, 2017

Here at Caregiving MetroWest, we are always on the lookout for new resources and information that can help family caregivers.

The National Institute on Aging, which is part of the National Institutes of Health, has an excellent new resource to share with information for caregivers to help them find the right primary care doctor for the loved one they are caring for.

The NIH notes that finding a primary care doctor can be a good first step in ensuring that your loved one is receiving quality health care. Having a main doctor who gets to know your loved one and what their health is normally like can help make medical decisions easier. The primary care doctor can help keep in touch with other specialists as well.

Here are some tips for choosing a doctor:

Decide what your family member is looking for in a doctor (Gender? Office hours? Size of practice?)
Identify several possible doctors by talking to friends and relatives, medical specialists, and other health professionals. They can give you the names of doctors with whom they have had good experiences.

You can learn more about how to help an older adult find a doctor that is right for them at the NIH website and get even more information in their extensive booklet on the subject (pdf).
