National Family Caregivers Month, celebrated every November
By DebraMcDonagh / November 2, 2021

National Family Caregivers Month, celebrated each November, is a time to recognize and honor family caregivers across the country.

The national observance is spearheaded by Caregiver Action Network (CAN), a nonprofit that provides free education, peer support, and resources to family caregivers. CAN announced the 2021 theme, #CaregiverAnd which encourages family caregivers to celebrate the passions and interests that enrich their lives. This month is a time to recognize and honor family caregivers across the country.

The RAISE Family Caregivers Act

RAISE, which became law on Jan. 22, 2018, directs the Secretary of Health and Human Services to develop a national family caregiving strategy. With support from The John A. Hartford Foundation, the National Academy of State Health Policy (NASHP) created the RAISE Act Family Caregiver Resource and Dissemination Center to:

  • Develop family caregiving resources for state and federal policymakers and other stakeholders;
  • Provide support to the council and its subcommittee member as they craft policy recommendations;
  • Convene experts and thought leaders to provide perspectives and expertise to the council; and
  • Support states as they develop policies to address family caregiver issues.

The name "R.A.I.S.E." is also an acronym for – Recognize, Assist, Include, Support, Engage.
