Alzheimer's Association holding educational events and workshops in MetroWest
By Douglas Flynn / December 30, 2016

The Alzheimer's Association of Massachusetts/New Hampshire is offering a number of educational events in the MetroWest area in the coming month.

Workshops on "Effective Communication Strategies" will be held in Framingham on Jan. 5 and in Millis on Jan. 13. There will also be one in Marlborough on Feb. 28.

In describing the workshop, the Alzheimer's Association notes that communication is more than just talking and listening – it’s also about sending and receiving messages through attitude, tone of voice, facial expressions and body language. As people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias progress in their journey and the ability to use words is lost, families need new ways to connect.

Participants in the workshops will explore how communication takes place when someone has Alzheimer’s, learn to decode the verbal and behavioral messages delivered by someone with dementia, and identify strategies to help you connect and communicate at each stage of the disease.

The Framingham workshop will take place from 1-2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 5 at Heritage at Framingham Assisted Living (747 Water Street, Framingham, MA 01701). Call 508-665-5370 to RSVP.

The Millis workshop will take place from 1-2:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 13 at the Millis Council on Aging (900 Main Street, Millis, MA 02054). To RSVP, call 800-272-3900 or click the sign-up link here.

The Marlborough workshop will take place from 6-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at Pleasantries Adult Day (195 Reservoir Street, Marlborough, MA 01752). To RSVP, call 800-272-3900 or click the sign-up link here.

The Alzheimer's Association will also hold an educational event entitled, "The Basics: Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease" on Thursday, Jan. 19 from 6:30-8 p.m. at HeartSong Spiritual Wellness (23 Pine Street, Milford, MA 01757).

In describing this event, the Alzheimer's Association notes that Alzheimer's disease is not a normal part of aging. This program provides information about the disease and related dementias, the benefits of early detection, causes and risk factors, treatment, and services offered by the Alzheimer's Association. Presented by trained Alzheimer's Association staff and volunteers. Group size may be limited. Program is free of charge.

To RSVP, call 800-272-3900 or click the sign-up link here.
