An excellent starting point for any caregiver is a call to your local ASAP’s information and referral department to learn about all the services and resources available in your area. The ASAP information and referral department can provide valuable guidance and assistance throughout your caregiving journey. Your town’s Council on Aging is another essential tool to help you understand and access available resources for your loved one.

Aging Services Access Points, commonly referred to as ASAPs, are one-stop entry points for all of the services and benefits available to seniors in Massachusetts. ASAPs manage the Massachusetts Home Care Program, Meals on Wheels, Money Management Program and Caregiver Support Program, as well as provide information and referrals for senior services such as home care, housing options, public benefits, legal assistance, hospice care, the ombudsman program, health insurance, senior companions and adult day care. BayPath also serves as a federal Area Agency on Aging (AAA), receiving and disbursing federal funding under the Older Americans Act.

Councils on Aging (COAs) are local volunteer organizations that offer information and direct services to seniors, their caregivers and other people with aging issues. COAs are part of the local government, and work with other senior agencies and city/town departments to provide social, recreational, health, safety and educational programs for seniors in their communities. Most COAs operate Senior Centers for area residents age 60 or older. COAs are also home to each town’s SHINE Program representatives, who provide free, confidential and unbiased health insurance information, assistance and counseling.

Neighbor Brigade is a non-profit organization that establishes and mobilizes community-based networks of volunteers to provide immediate and free assistance to neighbors experiencing sudden crises such as cancer treatment, illness, accident or other tragedy. Neighbor Brigade volunteers provide critical support services such as home-delivered meals, transportation to and from medical appointments and home maintenance help.

COA B.A.G.S. Program provides transportation and assistance for in-store shopping for Needham residents age 60 or older. Home delivery is an option for elders unable to go to store. No fee, donations accepted. In addition, the COA has entered a partnership with Charles River ARC where ARC clients will shop for elders.

Senior Medical Escort Program (Springwell)Program matches seniors with volunteers to drive and/or accompany them to medical appointments monday-Friday between 9 a.m.-5 p.m. in Boston and the western suburbs. Individuals must be 60 or over, unable to get to medical appointments independently and able to get in and out of car with minimal assistance. Rider responsible for tolls and parking fees.
